Big Ideas, Meaningful Connections: Building the Future of SA-UK Partnerships
On a sweltering London summer evening, something remarkable happened.
Despite the heatwave, professionals, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, charity leaders, and changemakers gathered at The Lekker Network x SA-UK Trust Network | Big Ideas & Meaningful Connections with a shared belief: that meaningful relationships have the power to create meaningful impact.
Hosted through a collaboration between the SA-UK Trust Network and The Lekker Network, the event was created to bring together two communities that share a common connection to South Africa but often engage from different perspectives. One rooted in philanthropy, development and social impact; the other in business, entrepreneurship and professional networks.
The evening was deliberately designed to move beyond traditional networking.
Instead, it focused on a bigger question: what becomes possible when people, organisations and networks work together across sectors, geographies and experiences?
Throughout the panel discussion and networking conversations that followed, a common theme emerged. Partnerships are no longer only about funding. They are about combining skills, networks, expertise, influence and ideas to unlock greater impact.
Our panellists, Felix Spies, Jill Ritchie, Tracy Kriel and Cara Goschen, expertly guided by moderator Kelvin Glen, shared practical examples of what collaboration looks like in action. From strengthening communities and supporting nonprofits, to building businesses and creating opportunities through trusted networks, the discussion highlighted the many ways that South Africans around the world can contribute to the country’s future.
One of the most encouraging takeaways from the evening was the growing recognition that the South African diaspora represents far more than a network of expats. It is a powerful ecosystem of skills, experience, capital, influence and goodwill. When connected intentionally, that ecosystem can create opportunities that benefit both South Africa and those seeking to remain meaningfully connected to it.
The event also reinforced the role that trusted platforms and networks play in making those connections possible. Whether supporting charitable giving, facilitating partnerships, connecting entrepreneurs or creating opportunities for learning and collaboration, there is significant potential to build stronger bridges between the UK and South Africa in the years ahead
